Wrap it in a Greensleeve, the Zero Waste, Zero Plastic iPad Case

kiwi greensleeveAs the relatively new owner of an iPad, I’ve grown to love a number of things about it, such as the easy-to-use interface, the amazing screen quality, the thousands of free and cheap apps, and the light weight and thin size of it.

But the very thing that makes it unique – the tablet and open screen aspect – is also one of its biggest weaknesses. Instead of folding up a laptop, which protects its screen, you’ve now got to cover or wrap the iPad something before shoving it in your bag.

It seems a shame to add an attachable cover to such a streamlined gadget, so I haven’t done so, but I do have a fantastic case for it which is not only simple and elegant, but it’s also about as green as you can get.

gray greensleeveIt’s called the Greensleeve, and it’s made completely from pure wool – a 100% plastic-free case, made by hand in the U.S. on human-powered machines in a ‘zero waste’ process.

Gone Studio, the makers of Greensleeve, use no plastic or other petrochemicals in their products, and everything from the process gets recycled or reused, making this case a green dream (other than the grass-to-sheep-to-wool process, the only energy in the manufacture of the Greensleeve is from either hand or foot-power).

Zero energy: That’s right–we don’t use any electricity in making Gone Studio products for you. We use only natural materials and components made with minimal energy, and our in-house manufacturing is 100% electricity-free, using only hand- and foot-powered tools and machinery.”

I’ve had mine for about a month now, and have found it to be convenient and useful for the iPad. The device fits neatly inside, and a generous flap with a snap closure keeps it secure. The wool is soft and thick, adding a layer of protection on all sides, and the back of the snap even sports a covering of cork to ensure no scratches come from the cover itself. With the iPad inside it, the Greensleeve still fits into the tablet-sized pockets on my backpack without a hitch, and because of the thickness of the felted wool, it feels as if it’s made to last.

The Greensleeve iPad case is available in Kiwi Green or Charcoal Gray for just $29.90.

[I was sent a complimentary review model of the Greensleeve, but all opinions in this review are mine.]
