1. Bear Mountain State Park

There’s nothing quite as refreshing as retreating to wilderness to replenish your energy and get a break from reality.

If you’re looking for an easy drive and some beautiful scenery, then Bear Mountain State Park, just an hour’s drive from NYC, is the place to go. This 5,067 acre park includes some pretty impressive mountains, including Bear Mountain, Dunderberg Mountain, and West Mountain. There is also a pretty cool bird sanctuary here, the Iona Island Bird Sanctuary.

You can easily spend a day or more here hiking, biking, fishing, bird watching, boating, and swimming. Or, if you’re a snow bunny, there’s also sledding, ice skating, and cross-country skiing trails available in the winter.

2. Old Westbury Gardens

Built in 1906 by architect George A. Crawley, the Old Westbury Gardens consist of a massive mansion surrounded by beautiful gardens, lakes and ponds.

The Westbury Gardens are a perfect place for a weekend stroll if you’re looking for an alternative to the busy parks of New York City.

Also, the rooms in the Westbury are extremely well-preserved. They contain beautiful artwork and English antiques. On the weekend, you can take a guided tour of the botanical gardens and of the mansion.

3. Blue Hill Farm

Blue Hill Farm, just 50 minutes from New York City, is a family-owned farm that is also home to two restaurants and a farmer’s market.

The farm produces fresh produce that is sold in both their restaurants in New York and their on-site market. The market also sells locally-sourced products from other nearby farms. Browsing the market you will find a plethora of fruits, vegetables, honeys, spices, herbs, pastries, and breads.

This is a great place to go if you’re looking for some unique handmade products or gifts for friends and family.

4. Fire Island

Often overlooked by the closerby islands, Fire Island, a 1 hour and 45 minute trip from the mainland, is certainly worth the trip.

After you’ve got your fix of the Statue of Liberty on your Liberty Cruise, head to this island to enjoy a pristine shoreline and lush vegetation. The island offers hiking trails, canoeing, boating, and fishing. You can even take a guided ranger tour to explore the island more fully.

And if you’re really feeling the vibe of this Island, you can spend a few days camping at Watch Hill.
