Study Finds Link Between Depression and Magnesium Deficiency

While depression may develop for multiple reasons, researchers have found a link between a magnesium deficiency and depression. This discovery has encouraged clinicians and other researchers to further investigate if a magnesium supplementation may be a possible option for treating chronic and major depression.

Several studies reported by George Eby of the Eby Research Institute show that the intake of magnesium resulted in depression recovery. The dosage varied from 125 to 300 mg of supplemental magnesium. The controlled trial randomized the choosing of elderly patients with depression and type 2 diabetes and aimed to compare magnesium and an FDA-approved antidepressant.

The investigators found that both treatment methods proved to be equally effective in decreasing depression symptoms. However, it’s important to note that antidepressants may potentially cause some side effects in users.

The study shows that it may be beneficial to increase magnesium intake in order to reduce the risk of depression. Magnesium deficiency has not only been linked to depression but to other conditions such as migraines, IBS, and anxiety as well.

Migraines and IBS are both related to muscle spasms, which can be relaxed with the help of magnesium.

“Magnesium couples with calcium working with the special channels that have to do with the activity of our muscles,” says Dr. Svetlana Kogan, MD, “Magnesium helps control the contraction of that muscle tissue so it isn’t too tight or too weak. The body is very smart and will take as much [of the mineral] as it needs to contract either stronger or weaker. It works very well with the wisdom of the body.”

Not only is magnesium vital for over 300 enzyme processes in the human body, it can also help control physical effects of anxiety, like increased blood pressure.
