DIY Tips For How To Install Home Security Lights

It is a sad fact of life that security is an important and ongoing issue in every home. Without adequate protection you may find that you are increasingly likely to be targeted either by vandals or burglars. Of course this is not always the case, but the brightness of home security lights is a definite deterrent.

It is possible to install home security lights yourself. However, if you have not attempted this before or have any doubt about your capabilities it is advisable to contact a professional electrical services provider. They know what they are doing and will provide a guarantee!

If you decide to complete the install yourself then you should consider these tips:

Decide the Layout

The first thing you need to do is decide how many lights you need and where they should be positioned. To do this you need to consider how much light each security light emits and where they need to be positioned to ensure there are no dark spots.

Security lights are there to deter people from coming onto your property; the more you have the quicker someone will leave if they get caught within their beam.

Deciding the layout will help you to calculate how many lights you need.

Choose the Light

Knowing the number of lights is a great start but you now need to consider which type of light is best for you. Every light should be IP rated to ensure they are waterproof. This will ensure they can handle whatever the weather throws at them.

You then need to decide if you want floodlights, spotlights, or any other type of light. The difference in types can affect the amount of light you have available on your property when looking for an intruder.

It is also important to consider whether you are going to or already have a CCTV system. This may need good light to ensure it records pictures at night.

Replacing an Existing Fixture

Once you have decided where to locate the new security lights you may find that you are replacing existing fixtures. This makes your job easier. Simply turn off the electricity supply and disconnect the old light. You can then connect the new light up using the old cables; assuming they are long enough. A power screwdriver can make this job much quicker.

Adding New Lights

If you are looking to add new lights then you will need to drill screw holes for the lights and mount them in place. This is relatively easy but you need to have them mounted on a solid surface where the cable join will be protected from the elements.

You also need to consider how far they are from any existing circuit and how many additional lights you are planning on placing on one circuit.

Extending the Cabling

To add security lights you need to use an approved connection box. You will also need to understand if your system has a radial circuit or a ring one. This will make a difference to how much cable you need and how you run it between lights.

This is a worthwhile project. Security lights give you peace of mind and help you to appreciate your property more.
