This month is National Breastfeeding Month, an event which highlights the importance of breastfeeding. It is just one part of the education and policy work being done by the U.S. Breastfeeding Committee to help remove barriers to breastfeeding in our country.
It’s up to all of us, including our friends and family and everyone in our community and work and play environments, to help make breastfeeding easier for mothers and infants.
Last year, the Surgeon General, Regina Benjamin, called on the entire nation to take on 20 distinct action steps toward that goal, because it really is one of the most important things in a young baby’s life, and one which is also quickly dropped by many new mothers:
“One of the most highly effective preventive measures a mother can take to protect the health of her infant and herself is to breastfeed. However, in the U.S., while 75 percent of mothers start out breastfeeding, only 13 percent of babies are exclusively breastfed at the end of six months.” – Surgeon General Call to Action
