How Antibiotics are Used for Gum Disease

Antibiotics are a widely used family of medications that are able to fight bacterial infections. They work by stopping the bacteria from multiplying, forcing the bacteria to die off.

Some bacteria in your body are good, but there are also harmful bacteria that can cause infection. It is harmful bacteria that are responsible for causing gum disease.

Bacteria are the chief cause of gum diseases like periodontitis and gingivitis. Bacteria accumulate in the mouth after you have eaten something and there are residual food particles left over on the teeth, between the teeth and on the gums. Unless the bacteria are removed regularly through an oral health routine, the gums will begin to develop an infection and you will begin to notice symptoms of gum disease cropping up.

Fortunately, if you do develop gum disease, there are a number of ways in which the bacteria can be effectively eradicated. One of the ways that dentists can successfully treat gum disease is through the use of antibiotic medications.

Generally, your dentist will prescribe oral antibiotics either in tablet or syrup form or they may choose to use a topical antibiotic solution that is applied directly to the infected gums. By using antibiotics, it may be possible for people to avoid undergoing invasive and painful dental surgery. If you have gum disease, then your dentist will have to decide what treatment option is going to be most effective for you.

Oral Antibiotics to Fight Gum Disease

Some of the most common antibiotics for gum disease are:

  • Tetracycline hydrochloride
  • Doxycycline
  • Minocycline
  • Roxithromycin
  • Moxiflixacin
  • Metronidazole
  • Periostat

If your dentist chooses to prescribe antibiotics to overcome your gum disease, then they will choose the best option depending on how extensive your condition is as well as taking into consideration your medical history.

Effective Personal Dental Care

While antibiotics may be an effective part of a treatment plan for gum disease, it cannot be overstated that gum disease can be a serious health condition. As such, it is always best to try to prevent the condition from occurring at all rather than having to deal with treatment.

In order to prevent gum disease you need to brush your teeth after each meal, floss to get rid of residual food particles stuck between teeth and use a mouthwash to flush away left over bacteria. If you are committed to your oral health routine and visit your dentist regularly for a check-up, then you are likely to be able to prevent the infection from developing at all.
