Filtered vs tap water: What is the difference?

On a warm day there is nothing like a cool, refreshing glass of water to quench your thirst. Drinking water also helps to maintain the balance of fluids in your body. This balance is important to several functions including digestion, circulation and the creation of saliva. The question is, where should you get your drinking water from?

Most people have drinking water available in their home. It’s easy to access; all you have to do is turn on the tap and fill a glass. However, the water that comes from the tap may not be as clean and healthy as you think it is.

Why is tap water not always healthy to drink?

The problem with tap water is that it does not just magically appear from the tap; it goes through a whole process before it gets there. The process starts when the water is taken from underground sources or above ground areas of water, such as reservoirs. The water is then treated with chemicals to remove dangerous bugs. These chemicals can affect the taste of the water.

After being treated, the water is pumped along pipes and eventually arrives in your home water supply. As it travels along these pipes, water can pick up debris and chemicals which affect how clean and healthy the water is.

The benefits of filtering water

You can see that the quality and taste of water may not be ideal, by the time it reaches the taps in your home. This is why it makes sense to filter the water before you drink it. You may want to use a filtering jug which you simply fill with water. Although this is a popular solution because of its affordability, it’s not ideal in the long term.

There are more suitable filtration systems available, that provide good value for money over time. Either a counter top or an under sink water filter is a good investment for you. The difference between the two systems is that under sink water filters take up less space as they are located under the sink and can filter more water at once than counter top water filters. Under sink systems are more expensive but they can be a better option if you are likely to filter a moderate amount of water.

You also have the option to choose a water filter system for your entire home. This type of filtration system filters water as it enters your home. This means that all of your household water is filtered for impurities. If you live in an area where the water is hard, you may want to take a look at water softening systems as softening the water supply can help reduce damage to appliances.

You can see that tap water is not always good to drink; it can be contaminated with chemicals and dirt. Filtering water makes sense and there are plenty of different filtration systems to choose from so you should be able to find the right one to suit your needs.
