4 Tricks To Protect Your Kids’ Hearing

Hearing protection is important for everyone, but this is especially true for young children. Kids can be especially sensitive to sound, and they’re also more likely to accidentally expose themselves to sounds loud enough to be damaging in the long term. Here are just a few tips and tricks to ensure your kids’ hearing stays safe, making sure their hearing is healthy for years to come.

  1. Check the volume on their devices: It’s very easy for kids to accidentally turn the volume up on their phones, iPods, and tablets, and it’s even easier for them to not realize just how loud their devices actually are. Many devices have volume locks to prevent this, but for devices that don’t, remind your kids to keep the volume on their devices at no more than half-level.
  2. Know when to be careful: There are many loud events and settings in kids’ lives, from sporting events to school assemblies to even loud family events. Make a list with your kids of events that might be loud enough to warrant taking a few breaks every now and then, or even using hearing protection.
  3. Pick hearing protection that works for them: For some kids, earplugs will work best, and for some earmuffs will work best; it’s mostly a question of personal preference. Depending on the fit, earplugs can reduce noise by 15 to 30 decibels, making otherwise unsafe volumes easier to manage. Make sure your kid helps you pick out which one works best for them; it will make them feel better about using it in the future.
  4. Make time for regular checkups: Have your children’s hearing tested at regular intervals to make sure they’re staying well-protected and healthy. If a problem does come up, your general practitioner should be able to spot it and address the issue.

Kids can have very sensitive hearing, but with these tips, you should be able to make sure they stay safe and healthy. With the number of loud activities in kids’ lives today, it’s important to protect kids’ hearing as much as possible.
